The latest Producer Price Index (PPI) from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) dropped this week and it shows prices for materials used in door and window manufacturing continued to increase across the board, not only from September to October 2021, but on a year-over-year basis as well.

In October, the monthly PPI for flat glass in the commodity category continued to climb, rising by 2.6% from the previous month and up 9.8% compared to the previous year. According to BLS, the commodity classification “organizes products and services by similarity or material composition, regardless of the industry classification of the producing establishment.”

The index for flat glass manufacturing in the industry classification continued the positive trend with a 4.6% jump from September 2021, and a full 15.5% increase on a year-over-year basis. The industry classification measures “changes in prices received for the industry’s output sold outside the industry (that is, its net output).”

The PPI for metal windows increased by 1% from September and clocks in at 15% over the October 2020 report. Prices for metal doors and frames also increased from September to October, improving 1.2% and improving 24.4% since last year. Prices for wood window units rose 2.2% from the previous month and was up 8.8% on a year-over-year basis. Prices for wood doors for interior and exterior applications also increased in October 2021, up 1.6% from September, and that carried over to an increase of 14.7% over October 2020 pricing.

The price for thermoplastic resins and plastic materials went up 3.7% over September 2021, and saw a jump of 51.2% from October of last year. Prices for fiberglass plastic products increased by 1% from the previous month but had an increase of 11.6% over the previous October.

The cost of builders’ hardware, which includes hardware used in doors and windows, rose a solid 5.6% from September to October, and increased by 17.2% from October 2020.
