Wood Windows Experience Above-Market Growth in 2022

May 18th, 2023 by Travis Rains

The Fenestration and Glazing Industry Alliance (FGIA) released its U.S. Industry Statistical Review and Forecast for 2022-23. While the past year saw residential prime window volumes on the rise, the 2023 outlook for that segment of the industry is a bit bleaker.

According to the forecast, residential prime window volumes grew by 0.5% in 2022 over 2021 figures, while demand for products made for new construction experienced a 1.2% increase. However, demand for products aimed at the remodeling and replacement market underwent a 0.1% decrease.

Looking ahead, the forecast shows that residential window demand is expected to decline by as much as 7% in 2023. FGIA officials say that’s the result of a decline in housing starts in the second half of 2022, and lower product demand stemming from exhausted backlogs. A rebound of 5.1% is expected in 2024, followed by another 3% increase the following year.

“Vinyl continues to maintain its position as the leading frame material, with its share up to 75%,” the forecast reads. “Wood windows saw above-market growth in 2022 while aluminum windows saw a sharp decline.”

New Construction

In new construction, wood windows experienced a 3% increase from 2021 to 2022 and are expected to see a 14.7% decrease from 2022 to 2023. A rebound of 10.3% over 2023 figures is then forecast for 2024.

Shipments of aluminum windows decreased by 13.3% from 2021 to 2022 and are forecast to drop another 15% from 2022 to 2023. A rebound of 4.5% is forecast for 2024.

Vinyl windows experienced a 2.1% increase from 2021 to 2022, but a 14% decrease is forecast for 2022 to 2023. A 9% rebound is expected from 2023 to 2024.

Shipments of fiberglass windows jumped 15.3% from 2021 to 2022 but are forecast to drop by 13.3% in 2023. Come 2024, those figures are again forecast to rise by 15.3%.

Remodeling and Replacement

In remodeling and replacement, wood windows saw no percentage change from 2021 to 2022 but are forecast to experience a 2.4% decrease from 2022 to 2023. A rebound of 2.5% is forecast for 2024 over 2023 figures.

Shipments of aluminum windows saw a 25% decrease from 2021 to 2022 and are forecast to remain at those levels through 2024.

Shipments of vinyl windows grew by 0.4% from 2021 to 2022. However, those figures are forecast to drop by 0.8% from 2022 to 2023 before increasing by 2.1% in 2024.

Shipments of fiberglass windows saw no percentage change from 2021 to 2022 or 2022 to 2023. However, a 10% increase is forecast from 2023 to 2024.

Total Construction

For total construction, wood windows saw a 1.3% increase from 2021 to 2022, with a 6.6% decrease forecast for 2023. A rebound of 4.3% is forecast for 2024.

Shipments of aluminum windows fell by 14.7% from 2021 to 2022 and are forecast to drop another 17% from 2022 to 2023. An 8.3% rebound is expected in 2024.

Shipments of vinyl windows experienced a 0.9% increase from 2021 to 2022 and are forecast to experience a 6.7% decrease from 2022 to 2023 before jumping by 5% in 2024.

Shipments of fiberglass windows increased by 8.6% from 2021 to 2022 and are forecast to drop by 8% the year after. In 2024, however, shipments of fiberglass are forecast to rise again by 8.6%.
