Think Positive!

I’ve really been enjoying Dave Molenda’s “Positive Polarity” blogs here at DWM/Shelter magazine. If you haven’t had a chance to read his articles yet, do yourself a favor and check them out. Dave’s messages are upbeat with a lot of emphasis on positive thinking. They are also very real.

When I read Dave’s recent article about having a positive attitude I could actually hear my Dad telling me, “There is only one thing you can control in this world, Mark and that is your attitude.”

At the end of that article Dave told readers to email him and he would send them “5 Tips to be Positive.” I did. I recommend you ask Dave for his 5 tips, too. His email address is: dave@positivepolarity.com

It can be hard to think positive and greet each day with a smile when there are personal problems, health concerns and work issues that need resolved, but staying positive does influence results.

In Dave’s reply to my request for his “5 Tips to be Positive,” he told me about four positive things going on with him today. Then he asked me to tell him four things that were making my day great. I thought for a second and actually replied – even though I had “better” things to do. Here are 4 things I could say were making my day great…

1)      My son is working with me today and he’s so happy he is actually SINGING OUT LOUD … That is inspirational.

2)      Door and window orders are coming in and the pile of paperwork on my desk is shrinking!

3)      I have an appointment this afternoon to evaluate how to improve an outdoor living space for a client – one of my favorite things to do.

4)      I feel pretty good for an old guy…

Guess what?

Thinking of four things that were making me feel great wasn’t really all that hard. Writing them down made me realize how lucky I am – even though I wasn’t feeling lucky right before I wrote down four things that were making my day great…

Staying positive can be especially challenging for people who work in sales. After all, a good salesperson has a similar batting average as the best hitters in Major League Baseball. That means they fail 60 percent of the time or more. Dealing with that kind of rejection can be difficult. “Death of a Salesman” is an iconic movie about the worst way to deal with that rejection, but there are other ways slumping salespeople deal badly with rejection. Please think Positive! It really will get better…

I am going to ask you to do what Dave Molenda asked me…

Do yourself a favor and tell me – or someone – specifically why today is great!
