Technology and the State of the Industry Fill Out Fenestration Day

Fenestration Day might have ended on Thursday, but there’s still plenty of news to report from the big door and window event in Irvine, Calif.

The gathering, hosted by DWM magazine, attracted industry attendees to the Hotel Irvine Jamboree Center for a day of networking and educational seminars. Fenestration Day runs concurrently with Glass Expo West, a two-day trade show that wraps Friday afternoon.

On Thursday, DWM Publisher Tara Taffera and Mike Collins of Building Industry Partners gave a presentation on the state of the residential door and window industry.

Collins, a DWM columnist and blogger, shared results from his 2014 Door and Window Industry Benchmark Survey.

One of Collins’ key findings from the survey? Rising prices for door and window products, which he sees as a positive. “It’s a sign of strength in the industry that companies have been able to raise prices,” he said.

Another positive: Door and window products are reaching the market more rapidly. According to Collins, most manufactured products have a 45-day turnaround. Fenestration products only have a 30-day turnaround. Also, Collins says custom orders are being filled in an average of 14 days, which marks a big decrease in wait times from previous years.

Also on Thursday, one of the biggest seminars covered new technologies. Charlie Curcija of Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory talked about what lies ahead for doors and windows.

One major point of discussion: The future of triple glazing in the U.S. According to Curcija, there really isn’t one. “It’s chicken and egg with Kryptonite,” he said, pointing out that because there is no demand, no one invests in the technology.

Curcija also said codes and standards in the U.S. could use consolidation. “In the U.S., standards are decentralized,” he said. “This affects our ability to be a global player and contributes to confusion.”

On Friday at the Glass Expo West trade show, marketing and sales expert Brian Offenberger shared strategies for putting your business at the top of Google’s search results.

Later, Mic Patterson, the vice president of strategic development at Enclos, discussed the future of glass in the building skin.
