Roto Frank Wants to Fix the Labor Shortage in Manufacturing

There’s a labor shortage in manufacturing—and Roto Frank wants to do something about it. Chamber of Commerce Manufacturers Meeting

That was the focus of a special meeting for members of the Middlesex County Chamber of Commerce Manufacturing Council on May 27, 2015, hosted by the company at its North American headquarters in Chester, Conn.

The event attracted more than a dozen manufacturing companies in Middlesex County, as well as representatives from the Connecticut Department of Economic and Community Development and the U.S. Department of Commerce. After welcoming remarks by Chester first selectman Ed Meehan, Middlesex County Chamber of Commerce president Larry McHugh, and Roto Frank president and CEO Chris Dimou, attendees listened to presentations from members of the University of Connecticut and the German American Chamber of Commerce.

One of the solutions brought forth was from Lawrence K. Silbart, UConn’s vice provost for strategic initiatives. He discussed highlights of UConn’s Next Generation Connecticut, which is designed to expand educational opportunities, research, and innovation in the STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) disciplines at UConn over the next decade, which includes a new 125,000-square-foot technology park.

Anson Ma, assistant professor in UConn’s chemical and biomolecular engineering department, addressed the audience on the higher-education institution’s additive manufacturing initiatives, with a focus on a manufacturing innovation center and the learning opportunities for students in realizing the full potential of additive manufacturing for metals, plastics and biomaterials.

Tom Dzimian, director of career services of the German American Chamber of Commerce, discussed skills and innovation strategies that have been developed and used successfully in Germany and which can be used strengthen U.S. manufacturing training programs.
