PPI: Year-Over-Year Price Increases Continue

The June 2022 Producer Price Index (PPI) from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) shows mostly slight increases in pricing from May 2022 but continued substantial increases in prices from the same period in 2021.

In June, the monthly PPI for flat glass in the commodity category rose 0.1% from the previous month and was up 8.3% compared to the previous year. According to BLS, the commodity classification “organizes products and services by similarity or material composition, regardless of the industry classification of the producing establishment.”

The index for flat glass manufacturing in the industry classification also went up by 3.1% from May 2022, in addition to increasing 14% on a year-over-year basis. The industry classification measures “changes in prices received for the industry’s output sold outside the industry (that is, its net output).”

The PPI for metal windows saw no change from May figures but increased 31.9% from the same time last year. Prices for metal doors and frames also increased overall, 0.7% over the previous month and 31.8% over the previous year. Prices for wood window units saw no change from May but were up 13.4% on a year-over-year basis. Prices for wood doors for interior and exterior applications increased in June 2022, up 1.2%, and saw an increase of 20.6% over June 2021 pricing.

The price for thermoplastic resins and plastic materials increased by 1.2% over May 2022 and saw an increase of 3.3% compared to June 2021. Prices for fiberglass plastic products rose by 0.2% from the previous month, contributing to the 12.6% increase over last year.

The cost of builders’ hardware, which includes hardware used in doors and windows, increased 0.2% from May to June as well as by 10.9% from June 2021.
