The July 2022 Producer Price Index (PPI) from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) shows that prices for wood doors and window units, as well as metal doors, frames and windows, are experiencing double-digit percentage increases over the same period in 2021.

In July, the monthly PPI for flat glass in the commodity category rose 0.1% from the previous month and was up 6.9% compared to the previous year. According to BLS, the commodity classification “organizes products and services by similarity or material composition, regardless of the industry classification of the producing establishment.”

The index for flat glass manufacturing in the industry classification dropped by 0.2% from June 2022, but increased 11.8% on a year-over-year basis. The industry classification measures “changes in prices received for the industry’s output sold outside the industry (that is, its net output).”

The PPI for metal windows rose 0.3% from June figures and increased 30.7% from the same time last year. Prices for metal doors and frames saw similar increases of 0.3% from June 2022 and 30.4% from July 2021. Prices for wood window units saw no change from June but were up 13.5% on a year-over-year basis. Prices for wood doors for interior and exterior applications increased from June to July 2022, up 2.2%, and saw an increase of 22.6% over July 2021 pricing.

The price for thermoplastic resins and plastic materials decreased by 2.1% from June 2022 and 2.4% from July 2021. Prices for fiberglass plastic products rose by 0.2% from the previous month, contributing to the 12.4% increase over last year. The cost of builders’ hardware, which includes hardware used in doors and windows, increased 3.4% from June to July as well as by 12.6% from July 2021.
