PPI: Prices Split the Ticket in January
March 9th, 2023 by EditorThe latest Producer Price Index (PPI) from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) shows prices for materials used in door and window manufacturing were mostly flat from December 2022 to January 2023, but generally increased on a year-over-year basis.
In January, the monthly PPI for flat glass in the commodity category inched up 0.6% from the previous month and up 8.7% compared to the previous year. According to BLS, the commodity classification “organizes products and services by similarity or material composition, regardless of the industry classification of the producing establishment.”
The index for flat glass manufacturing in the industry classification continued an upward trend with a 0.5% jump from December 2022, and a full 18.9% increase on a year-over-year basis. The industry classification measures “changes in prices received for the industry’s output sold outside the industry (that is, its net output).”
The PPI for metal windows remained steady from December and clocks in at 13.1% over the January 2022 report. Prices for metal doors and frames also stagnated from December to January, while improving 7.5% since last year. Prices for wood window units showed no change from the previous month and were up 15.1% on a year-over-year basis. Prices for wood doors for interior and exterior applications also increased in January 2023, up 1.0% from December, and showed an increase of 19.3% over January 2022 pricing.
The price for thermoplastic resins and plastic materials dropped 2.5% from December 2022, and saw a slide of 13.4% from January of last year. Prices for fiberglass plastic products increased by 0.8% from the previous month but had an increase of 10.4% over the previous January.
The cost of builders’ hardware, which includes hardware used in doors and windows, showed no change from December to January, but rose by 7.3% from January 2022.
