PPI: Prices Flatline in December

January 26th, 2023 by Editor

The latest Producer Price Index (PPI) from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) dropped last week and it shows prices for materials used in door and window manufacturing leveling somewhat from November to December 2022, but mostly continuing to rise on a year-over-year basis.

In December, the monthly PPI for flat glass in the commodity category split the results, with no change from the previous month but up 11% compared to the previous year. According to BLS, the commodity classification “organizes products and services by similarity or material composition, regardless of the industry classification of the producing establishment.”

The index for flat glass manufacturing under the industry classification continued a positive trend with no change from November 2022, while showing a 22.4% increase on a year-over-year basis. The industry classification measures “changes in prices received for the industry’s output sold outside the industry (that is, its net output).”

The PPI for metal windows didn’t change from November but clocked in at 15.1% over the December 2021 report. Prices for metal doors and frames also remained stagnant from November to December, while improving from the previous year by 8.8%. Prices for wood window units didn’t change from the previous month but were up 18.0% on a year-over-year basis. Prices for wood doors for interior and exterior applications increased in December 2022, up 0.2% from November, as well as 19.0% over December 2021 pricing.

The price for thermoplastic resins and plastic materials dropped by 2.6% over November and was down 13.8% from December of the year previous. Prices for products made of fiberglass plastics increased by 1.7% from the previous month and had an increase of 15.6% over the previous December.

The cost of builders’ hardware, which includes hardware used in doors and windows, showed no change from November to December but rose by 5.6% from December 2021.
