January 5th, 2023 by Editor

The latest Producer Price Index (PPI) from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) was published recently, showing prices for materials used in door and window manufacturing increasing across the board—not only from October to November 2022, but also on a year-over-year basis.

In November, the monthly PPI for flat glass in the commodity category continued to climb, rising by 1.5% from the previous month and up 12.3% compared to the previous year. According to BLS, the commodity classification “organizes products and services by similarity or material composition, regardless of the industry classification of the producing establishment.”

The index for flat glass manufacturing in the industry classification matched the flat glass commodity with an increase of 1.5% from October 2022, and increased even more than the commodity did, a full 25.2% increase, on a year-over-year basis. The industry classification measures “changes in prices received for the industry’s output sold outside the industry (that is, its net output).”

The PPI for metal windows stagnated from October but increased by 17.6% over the November 2021 report. Prices for metal doors and frames increased slightly from October to November, improving 0.2% and with a 10% since last year. Prices for wood window units also remained steady from from the previous month but, like other commodities, was up 18% on a year-over-year basis. Prices for wood doors for interior and exterior applications also increased in November, up 0.1% from October, marking a full 20.6% increase over November 2020 pricing.
