PPI: Most Prices Rose in August 2022

Prices for materials used in door and window manufacturing mostly increased from July 2022 to August 2022, while rising on a year-over-year basis, according to the latest Producer Price Index (PPI) from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). However, there are some exceptions, such as with thermoplastic resins and plastic materials.

In August, the monthly PPI for flat glass in the commodity category rose 2.4% from the previous month and was up 11.3% compared to the previous year. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the commodity classification “organizes products and services by similarity or material composition, regardless of the industry classification of the producing establishment.”

The index for flat glass manufacturing also went up by 3.4% from July 2022, while increasing 20.3% on a year-over-year basis. The industry classification measures “changes in prices received for the industry’s output sold outside the industry (that is, its net output).”

The PPI for metal windows saw only a slight increase from July 2022, at 0.6%, but a much larger increase of 31% when compared to August 2021. Prices for metal doors and frames experienced no change over the previous month but an increase of 23.6% over the previous year. Prices for wood window units increased in August by 9.8% as well as by 21.5% on a year-over-year basis. Prices for wood doors for interior and exterior applications increased in August 2022, up 0.4%, and saw an increase of 21.9% over July 2021 pricing.

The price for thermoplastic resins and plastic materials dropped by 4.0% from July 2022 and saw a decrease of 7.8% compared to August 2021. Prices for fiberglass plastic products rose by 1.1% from the previous month, contributing to a 15% increase over last year.

The cost of builders’ hardware, which includes hardware used in doors and windows, rose by 2.5% from July to August and 14.1% from August 2021.
