The September 2022 Producer Price Index (PPI) from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) shows that prices for wood doors and window units, as well as metal doors, frames and windows, are experiencing double-digit percentage increases over the same period in 2021.

In September, the monthly PPI for flat glass in the commodity category rose 0.2% from the previous month and was up 10.3% compared to the previous year. According to BLS, the commodity classification “organizes products and services by similarity or material composition, regardless of the industry classification of the producing establishment.”

The index for flat glass manufacturing in the industry classification increased by 0.4% from August 2022, and rose 20.3% on a year-over-year basis. The industry classification measures “changes in prices received for the industry’s output sold outside the industry (that is, its net output).”

The PPI for metal windows dipped 0.4% from August figures but increased 28.1% from the same time last year. Prices for metal doors and frames saw similar changes, dropping slightly – 0.7% – from August 2022 and increasing 21.4% from September 2021. Prices for wood window units saw no change from August but was up 21.5% on a year-over-year basis. Prices for wood doors for interior and exterior applications increased from August to September 2022, up 0.3%, and saw an increase of 20.4% over September 2021 pricing.

The price for thermoplastic resins and plastic materials decreased on both levels, by 0.4% from August 2022 and 8.9% from September 2021. Prices for fiberglass plastic products rose by 0.1% from the previous month, contributing to the 14.8% increase over last year. The cost of builders’ hardware, which includes hardware used in doors and windows, flat lined from August to September but increased 13.1% from September 2021.
