PPI: Cost of Fenestration Materials Mostly Up in October
November 22nd, 2022 by EditorThe October 2022 Producer Price Index (PPI) from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) shows that prices for wood doors and window units, as well as metal doors, frames and windows, are experiencing double-digit percentage increases over the same period in 2021.
In October, the monthly PPI for flat glass in the commodity category rose 1.4% from the previous month and was up 10.3% compared to the previous year. According to BLS, the commodity classification “organizes products and services by similarity or material composition, regardless of the industry classification of the producing establishment.”
The index for flat glass manufacturing in the industry classification increased by 1.6% from September 2022, and rose 19.9% on a year-over-year basis. The industry classification measures “changes in prices received for the industry’s output sold outside the industry (that is, its net output).”
The PPI for metal windows reversed course from last month’s report, increasing 1.4% from September figures and increasing 28.6% from the same time last year. Prices for metal doors and frames saw similar changes, increasing slightly – 0.6% – from September 2022 and increasing 20.7% from October 2021. Prices for wood window units saw no change from September but was up 18.6% on a year-over-year basis. Prices for wood doors for interior and exterior applications increased from September to October 2022, up 0.3%, and saw an increase of 18.8% over October 2021 pricing.
The price for thermoplastic resins and plastic materials decreased on both levels, down by 3.1% from September 2022 and 12% from October 2021. Prices for fiberglass plastic products didn’t change from the previous month, but increased 13.4% increase over last year. The cost of builders’ hardware, which includes hardware used in doors and windows, flat lined from September to October but increased 7.9% from October 2021.
