Newpro and Thompson Creek Among Inc.’s Best Workplaces

Annually, Inc. magazine releases a list of companies the publication’s editors deem “Best Workplaces” in the U.S. Based on the results from employee surveys about work environments, among the list of 346 private companies deemed this year’s best are Newpro Home Improvement Solutions of Woburn, Mass., and Thompson Creek Window Company of Lanham, Md.

In partnership with Quantum Workplace, a software company that provides systems for employee feedback, the publication asks employees to provide insights across 30 areas, including communications and resources, individual needs, manager effectiveness, personal engagement, team dynamics and trust in leadership. Surveys also take into account career development, change management, benefits and perks, as well as the financial elements of the corporate culture.

“With today’s tight labor market, building a great corporate culture is more important than ever,” says Inc. magazine editor in chief James Ledbetter. “The companies on Inc.’s Best Workplaces list are setting an example that the whole country can learn from.”

The latest selection marks Thompson Creek’s second consecutive ranking among Inc. Best Workplaces. Founded in 1980, the company operates out of four locations serving the Mid-Atlantic region and currently employs approximately 400 people.

“We have fun. Our president determined that he wanted to build a company where work wasn’t a chore but something to enjoy and is fulfilling and rewarding,” reads a statement from company officials, in response to being chosen for the list. “As in every workplace, there are challenges, but co-workers are collegial and supportive, willing to pitch in to overcome them. Our work environment, enhanced by Ping-Pong championships, dart board competitions and the annual Fishapalooza daylong event on the Chesapeake, fosters that camaraderie.”

Rick Wuest, Thompson Creek president and CEO, said the recognition by Inc. magazine in an honor, adding that the survey also provides the company insights into how to continue improving the workplace.

“Our customers benefit, too, since engaged and contented employees who enjoy coming to work result in better customer service, better products and better installations,” Wuest says.

Newpro president and COO Anthony Cogliani concurs, noting “The Newpro culture is about putting people first,” further suggesting that happy employees translate to happy customers. Newpro is dedicated to providing its employees with opportunities for growth and appreciation, he says, noting that people are the company’s most valuable asset.

Cogliani is a third generation leader for Newpro Home Improvement Solutions, a company founded by his grandparents in 1945.

“In today’s tight labor market, where employees and candidates have so much opportunity and leverage, being awarded this recognition gives Newpro an advantage to attract top talent,” Cogliani says. “Our industry is very competitive and this recognition is one that attracts great talent looking for growth, opportunity and top culture. The third-party employee surveys that met the criteria and qualified us for this award really supported the leadership objectives to create a rewarding environment where people want to come to work and be part of something more than just a job.”

Inc. magazine and Quantum noted these distinct themes among Best Workplace finalists:

  • 99% provide health insurance—some covering the costs;
  • 49% allow employees to bring pets to work;
  • 65% take employees to offsite retreats to relax and recharge; and
  • 16% offer paid sabbaticals to reward length of service.
