MI Celebrates 300th Specially Adapted Veterans Home

September 11th, 2020 by Editor

MI Windows’ partner, Homes For Our Troops, will host a Volunteer Day and Key Ceremony for its 300th home recipient this weekend, while also participating in the National Day of Service and Remembrance for September 11. The custom home will be presented to Army SGT Nate Shumaker and family in Hillsboro, Mo. Shumaker, a Purple Heart recipient, was severely injured while serving in Afghanistan.

Similar to all Homes For Our Troops builds, this house features special adaptations, such as widened doorways for wheelchair access, a roll-in shower, and kitchen amenities that include pull-down shelving and lowered countertops.

The MI-supplied windows are specially designed to be easily operated from a wheelchair—allowing ample natural light and fresh air into the home. The adaptations to Homes For Our Troops houses limit mobility and safety issues associated with a traditional home, including navigating a wheelchair through narrow hallways or over thresholds, riding on carpets, or reaching for cabinets that are too high. The homes are made to be a place for veterans to safeguard themselves and their families, especially during these trying times.
