Masonite Corp. to Close Stockton Facility, Cites Weakened Residential Market

March 3rd, 2023 by Drew Vass, Executive Editor

[DWM] has confirmed that Masonite Corp. will close one of its U.S.-based manufacturing facilities, displacing 100 or more employees. In a notification letter sent by senior counsel Donald Tyler to California’s Workforce Services Division, the company discloses that it will cease operations at its door fabrication plant in Stockton, Calif. The closure is expected to be permanent, the letter states, attaching the blame to “a decrease in demand in the housing market.”

The letter meets requirements established by the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act of 1988, a U.S. labor law that requires employers with 100 or more employees to provide 60 days’ notice for planned closings and mass layoffs. All employees have been notified, the company reports. “We remain committed to supporting our Stockton employees and providing a seamless experience for our customers through the transition,” Lori Conrad, Masonite’s director of external communications, tells [DWM].

The closure marks Masonite’s second in six months, including another facility, in Walkerton, Ind., where it shed up to 84 jobs.

According to the recently filed notice, operations at the company’s Stockton plant will be phased out beginning in April 2023, ceasing by May 5, 2023. Officials say workers will continue to be employed through at least the May 5 date, while being phased out through May 31, 2023. According to the notice, employees are not unionized and bumping rights do not exist (which otherwise would give workers with greater seniority the right to replace workers with less seniority).
