Larson’s Storm Windows Receive AERC Certification for Energy Efficiency

Larson Manufacturing recently earned the Attachment Energy Rating Council’s (AERC) certification for energy efficiency on its storm windows. The company’s storm windows also recently received Energy Star certification.

An initiative supported by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), AERC is an independent, third-party group of manufacturers and researchers that rate, certify and label the energy performance of window attachments. There are two types of performance on which products are rated for potential energy savings: cool climate and warm climate. While the ratings are generated by software tools developed by DOE’s Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, they are intended to be easy to understand by consumers. This provides homeowners with a rating system available to assist them in selecting energy-efficient window attachments, such as storm windows, blinds, shades and films.

“Window attachments, which can be affordable alternatives to window replacements, can reduce heat loads and air conditioning bills when used properly,” said Alex Fitzsimmons, the DOE’s acting deputy assistant secretary for energy efficiency. “Building products like these can also help alleviate peak electricity demand on the grid when electricity is most expensive.”

According to the DOE, older home window systems can account for as much as 40% of annual heating and cooling costs, causing many homeowners to spend more money than necessary on heating and air conditioning. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency estimates that on a national average, Energy Star-certified storm windows can save homeowners $350 on their annual heating and cooling bills when installed over single-pane clear glass windows.
