Larson Manufacturing in Lake Mills, Iowa, to Close

September 22nd, 2022 by Travis Rains

Fortune Brands, the parent company of Larson Manufacturing, has announced the closure of the latter’s manufacturing plant located in Lake Mills, Iowa, with approximately 197 employees reportedly set to lose their jobs immediately or in the months to come.

“Outdoors and Security announced on Tuesday, September 20, that they conducted a reduction in force impacting positions across the organization, including the closure of three Larson facilities (Lake Mills, Iowa, Grand Prairie, Texas, and Senatobia, Miss.),” Fortune Brands announced. “The decision was based on continued efforts to mitigate external economic risks, an assessment of the industry, and the evolution of the organization to best align with its growth strategy.”

Fortune Brands says the development is not a reflection of the skills of the workforce at the location, but an “opportunity to strengthen the organization and solidify the long-term value of the business.”

Fortune Brands also says it’s committed to helping displaced workers and that the company “sincerely appreciates all of the associates who have demonstrated remarkable dedication over the years.”

Darwin Minnis, communications manager with Fortune Brands, confirmed on Thursday, September 22 that the second shift was cancelled as of Tuesday, with employees receiving 60 days of pay, while the first shift will end on November 18 and will receive severance packages.

“In addition, second shift is also eligible for transition support based on years of service,” Minnis told [DWM] magazine.

Officials for the Lake Mills Chamber Development Corp. say they’re doing what they can to connect local Larson employees with resources.

“Our deepest condolences to the employees and families affected by the announcement from Larson Manufacturing earlier today,” the corporation wrote on its Facebook page. “We will be gathering information and resources in the coming days and will do our best to support our Lake Mills residents! Any local businesses with job openings are encouraged to send information to the LMCDC at lmcdc@wctatel.net.”

Fortune Brands Home & Security acquired Larson less than two years ago in 2020. Larson is headquartered in Brookings, S.D., and also has door and window factories in Brookings and Mocksville, N.C.
