SEALANTS

Double Your Tremco Warranty

If you’re an insulating glass (IG) manufacturer that utilizes Tremco’s EnerEDGE warm-edge spacer system, we recently discovered a unique way to double the company’s coverage allowances for warranty issues. When combined with the company’s EnerSEAL 332 hot-melt, a butyl-based sealant that’s formulated for perimeter applications, officials say the company doubles the replacement amount offered via its 20-year warranty. “Tremco covers two times the replacement amount for covered claims during the year of original manufacture through year 20,” says John Buckley, manager of marketing, communications. Officials say EnerSEAL maximizes unit life when used in conjunction with EnerEDGE, by preventing premature moisture intrusion, via the product’s low water vapor permeability. The single-component product is solvent free, comes in 48-gallon drums and requires no mixing. According to product specifications, it offers excellent adhesion to a range of materials, including glass, aluminum, galvanized steel and common foam spacer, moisture barrier films, and offers fast setting for immediate handling.

Big Performance for Big Door Systems

Australian manufacturer Anthony Innovations recently announced a new door roller system that’s designed to make operation for larger doors and windows easier and less resistive—including those weighing up to 660 lbs. per panel. In a hands-on test, we found the product delivered as promised, moving such large doors with little effort. TraXtar wheels are computer numeric control (CNC) machined from a solid, industrial-strength polymer bar, which company officials say ensures their dimensional accuracy and also helps them to remain free of voids or impurities. Four wheels and a dual-layer bogie overcome rolling resistance and track inconsistency, to keep even the largest doors moving. Company officials say the material also offers superior strength and durability, along with impact and creep resistance, while also adding to thermal performance by eliminating the issues of thermal bridging. According to information provided by the company, the product performs well on aluminum and stainless steel track systems, while eliminating track deterioration commonly caused by steel wheels on metal-based track systems.

PASSIVE HOUSE

Revolution XL Gets Certified

After launching in fall 2017, Deceuninck recently announced that its Revolution XL Tilt and Turn window is now certified as a Passive House component. Co-developed with Chilliwack, British Columbia-based door and window manufacturer Westeck, the product is ranked for its high thermal and acoustical performance—a mark it achieves by accommodating up to 1-5/8-inch insulating glass units, as well as its compression seal technology, which is noted for exceptional resistance to air and water infiltration. “We developed the Revolution XL Tilt and Turn Passive House Edition window to support our customers who are following Passive House building design principles for residential and commercial projects,” says Filip Geeraert, president and CEO of Deceuninck North America. The product’s low-profile design offers maximum daylighting and is available in a broad range of architectural colors, including external metallic finishes and internal woodgrain patterns.

DECORATIVE GLASS

Beyond Modern and Transitional

Therma-Tru recently introduced two new products that company officials say are crafted to extend the look of decorative glass beyond modern and transitional. The company’s new Geometric and Pembridge lines include glass shapes and textures that are designed to match just about any style of home. Pembridge features a diamond theme that comes with three caming options: black nickel, brushed nickel or brass. The Geometric series leans more modern, through the use of small cubes designed to deliver multidimensional effects for a highly visual texture and privacy. Both series are designed to work with the company’s Fiber-Classic, Smooth-Star, Pulse, Profiles and Traditions product lines. Geometric is also suited for Classic-Craft products.

Omnia Pays Homage

Hardware manufacturer Omnia Industries recently introduced two new lines: ARC and Pocket Door Hardware. Company officials say ARC is a curated collection of tra-ditional door knobs and levers that pays tribute to late founder and chair-person Alberto Romolo Comini. The collection includes three knobs and levers that can be coordinated with rose designs available in two sizes.

Omnia’s new Pocket Door Hardware includes new solid brass and stain-less steel locks, including modern and traditional trim designs that company officials suggest complement any décor. The product includes a unique feature that conceals mounting screws and all trim styles are also available as flush pulls.

Emergency Egress for Sliding Doors

INOX recently introduced a mortise lock for sliding doors with a locking entry function that company officials say is the only on the market to include a single-action, quick emergency exit. The PD95 features a solid-brass deadbolt with a one-inch throw, self-retracting hook with non-marring latch bolt, a 2 mm-thick faceplate in either stainless steel or brass, and a trim-locking device for emergency egress. The deadbolt automatically releases with a push of the inner handle in case of emergencies, and the ADA thumb turn helps meet code compliance for residential and commercial projects. For interior doors, an optional coin release helps further ADA compliance and adds an additional safety feature, allowing the door to be opened from the outside without a key, in the event of an emergency where occupants are unable to access the handle.

TOOLS

Portable Cleanup and Protection

DeWalt just introduced the DCV585, an OSHA Table One compliant dust extractor that operates on the company’s 60-volt (Flexvolt) battery, to provide on-the-go cleanup and protection from respirable crystalline silica (especially of note for door and window contractors dealing with applications involving fiber cement). The unit produces 125 CFM and includes a unique wireless control feature that allows for remote activation and an automatic filter cleaning mechanism. Available in November 2018, the DCV585 comes bare (without batteries) for $349, or with two batteries and two HEPA filters for $549.

PERFORMANCE

Eliminate Secondary Sealants

Officials for Perfection Plastics recently announced that the company is now the exclusive American manufacturer and distributor for WorldSpacer and EcoSpacer, two warm edge options for the residential and commercial insulating glass (IG)industries.

According to company officials, WorldSpacer is the first stainless steel, flexible polyurethane spacer, including a vapor barrier that adheres to all sealants—eliminating up to 80 percent of secondary sealant costs for IG manufacturers. Designed for residential applications, EcoSpacer is a flexible poly-urethane foam spacer with an economical and eco-friendly metalized polyester vapor barrier. Both products are silicone free and available in metric and imperial sizes ranging from 3/16-inch to two inches, with matte black finishes.

Both are suited to manual or automated production lines.

SEALANTS

Quick Dry

When it comes to door and window installations, time is often of the essence. We found an acrylic latex-based sealant by DAP Products Inc. that’s worth considering for those moments. DAP’s Dynaflex Ultra Advanced Exterior Sealant is specially formulated for door and window applications and is designed to provide a strong adhesion to a wide variety of building substrates, including fiber cement, vinyl, aluminum, wood, stucco, brick and masonry. And the product is paint-ready in just one hour. Company officials say Dynaflex Ultra won’t crack or fade, is dirt resistant and carries a lifetime warranty against the growth of mold, mildew and algae. The product’s hydrophobic surface also prevents water absorption for an ultra waterproof and weatherproof seal that doesn’t swell, soften, blister or break down over time. The sealant is available in 10 colors, but be forewarned: the company does not suggest applying it to house wraps, such as DuPont’s Tyvek, and other fluoropolymer-based substrates, like Teflon.
