Freedonia Home Improvement Study Points to Continued Demand

July 11th, 2022 by Travis Rains

The rise in home improvement activities during COVID-19 includes doors and windows but extends to bathrooms, home offices and more. A new report from the Freedonia Group examining home improvement trends shows that such projects will likely continue through 2022 as materials and labor become available.

Data collected across 2021 and through February 2022 indicates that 31% of consumers engaged in home improvement and remodeling projects as a result of the pandemic. According to the study, the pandemic saw an uptick in bathroom remodeling, the conversion of rooms to home offices, and additions of patios, decks and porches.

“Converting a room to a home office and improving outdoor spaces fit with pandemic era trends of increased remote work and entertaining outdoors at home,” officials for Freedonia wrote in a press release.

In addition, the report provides insight on the level of improvement activities expected in the months ahead, including an increase in the number of respondents expecting to remodel within 12 months following Freedonia’s survey, both in 2020 and 2021. That includes planned installations and consumer attitudes.

“This increase could include projects delayed in 2020 or in 2021 due to uncertainty or inability to get access to materials or workers needed to complete the project in the time or at the price expected,” researchers suggest.

While the firm failed to provide specifics in its release, the report breaks down door and window purchases for the U.S. by region and income bracket, as well as major remodeling activities. Delivery times for doors, windows and other products through 2021 are also addressed.
