DWM May Newscast: Up-Close Look at Hurricane Research

May 9th, 2013 by Chris Bunn

How do you know how your products would perform in a category 5 hurricane or an E4 tornado? DWM magazine gives the first-ever look at one weather testing machine that can offer some of these answers in this month’s newscast. DWM editor Tara Taffera recently visited the University of Florida to interview hurricane expert Dr. Forrest Masters and Henry Upjohn, CEO of Special-Lite Inc., for an inside look.

  1. Wow, Tara! What a great video feature! Thanks so much for sharing this new research.

  2. Tara:
I am the person that contacted Henry Upjohn about the need to build stronger hurricane wind and missel impact resistant garage doors after working with Zurich, N.A. on all of the hurricanes that hit main land U.S. from 2004 to 2008. My documentation includes over 200 pictures of the costly destruction to commercial buildings which resulted from Cat 1 to the Cat 4 Hurricane Katrina.

We signed a consulting contract with Henry’s company Special-Lite, Inc. and my first mission was to locate a Hurricane Wind Simulator which I located at the University of Florida in Gainesville. I introduced Henry to Dr. Forrest Masters and the rest is history.

Thanks for your masterful narration of the video on Hurricane Research, a job well done.
