AGC and Saint-Gobain have partnered to design a flat glass line that is expected to reduce direct CO2 emissions.

AGC officials explain that, as part of the collaboration, the company’s patterned glass production line in the Czech Republic will be refurbished into a high-performing line that aims to be 50% electrified and 50% fired by a combination of oxygen and gas.

“We are delighted to co-develop with AGC a new advanced technology for flat glass production in the world,” says Joana Arreguy, Saint-Gobain’s industrial director of glass. “This project aligns with Saint-Gobain’s commitment to reach carbon neutrality by 2050. This reduction in direct CO2 emissions will benefit our customers who look increasingly for low-carbon products to be integrated into their solutions.”

Officials from Saint-Gobain say that the development will pave the way for converting industrial flat glass lines to be powered mainly by low-carbon electricity, which will significantly reduce carbon emissions. The new technology is expected to be implemented on AGC’s patterned glass line by the second half of 2024.
