The latest Producer Price Index (PPI) from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) shows prices for materials used in door and window manufacturing continued to increase across the board, not only from November to December 2024, but on a year-over-year basis.
In December, the monthly PPI for flat glass in the commodity category continued to climb, rising by 0.2% from the previous month and up 1.3% compared to the previous year. According to BLS, the commodity classification “organizes products and services by similarity or material composition, regardless of the industry classification of the producing establishment.”
The index for flat glass manufacturing in the industry classification continued the positive trend with a 0.5% jump from November 2024, and a 3.5% increase on a year-over-year basis. The industry classification measures “changes in prices received for the industry’s output sold outside the industry (that is, its net output).”
The PPI for metal windows flatlined from November but clocked in at 0.6% over the December 2023 report. Prices for metal doors and frames also showed no change from November to December, while improving 2.7% since the previous year. Prices for wood window units stagnated from the previous month as well, but were up 3.2% on a year-over-year basis. There was no change in prices for wood doors for interior and exterior applications from November to December 2024, but that didn’t seem to bother the year-over-year pricing, which increased by 1.8% over December 2023.
The price for thermoplastic resins and plastic materials was the first to drop, down 0.9% over November 2024, and down 1.4% from December of the previous year. Prices for fiberglass plastic products increased by 0.9% from the previous month and saw an increase of 6.7% over the previous December.
The cost of builders’ hardware, which includes hardware used in doors and windows, showed no signs of change from November to December, but rose by 0.7% from December 2023.
