The latest Producer Price Index (PPI) from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) dropped today and the numbers show a pretty even keel for the fenestration industry. Prices for materials used in door and window manufacturing remained relatively steady across the board, not only from April to May 2024, but on a year-over-year basis.

In May, the monthly PPI for flat glass in the commodity category rose by 0.2% from the previous month and was up 0.9% compared to the previous year. According to BLS, the commodity classification “organizes products and services by similarity or material composition, regardless of the industry classification of the producing establishment.”

The index for flat glass manufacturing in the industry classification broke even, with a 0.3% bump from April 2024, but an equal drop—down 0.3%—over 2023. The industry classification measures “changes in prices received for the industry’s output sold outside the industry (that is, its net output).”

The PPI for metal windows increased by just 0.2% from April but also clocked in 0.3% down from the previous year. Prices for metal doors and frames remained steady from April to May and improved 0.9% since last year. Prices for wood doors for interior and exterior applications was the third entry to show no changes from April to May 2024, increasing over May 2023 by 2.7%.

The price for thermoplastic resins and plastic materials reversed that trend, increasing 1.2% over April 2024 but dropping 3.9% from May of last year. Prices for fiberglass plastic products stagnated from the previous month but increased 1.8% over the previous May.
The cost of builders’ hardware rounded things out with no change from April to May, and a drop of 0.9% from May 2023.
