Prices for materials used in door and window manufacturing mostly increased from March 2022 to April 2022, while rising on a year-over-year basis, according to the latest Producer Price Index (PPI) from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS).

In April, the monthly PPI for flat glass in the commodity category went up—slightly, at 0.6% from the previous month, and more significantly with a 9.8% increase over the previous year. According to BLS, the commodity classification “organizes products and services by similarity or material composition, regardless of the industry classification of the producing establishment.”

The index for flat glass manufacturing in the industry classification showed no change from March to April 2022, but was up 13.6% on a year-over-year basis. The industry classification measures “changes in prices received for the industry’s output sold outside the industry (that is, its net output).”

The PPI for metal windows increased both from March (1.4%) as well as 29.6% compared to the April 2021 report. Prices for metal doors and frames also increased overall, 0.6% over the previous month and 35.6% over the previous year. Prices for wood window units increased 2.8% in April, but was up 12.7% on a year-over-year basis. The PPI for wood doors for interior and exterior applications increased in April 2022, up 2.4% but saw an increase of 21.7% over April 2021 pricing.

The price for thermoplastic resins and plastic materials increased by 4.4% over March 2022, and carried that into an increase of 8.3% compared to April 2021. Prices for fiberglass plastic products flattened from the previous month, but clocked an overall increase of 13.5% increase over last year.

The cost of builders’ hardware, which includes hardware used in doors and windows, also increased just 0.1% from March to April, but increased by 16.4% from April 2021.
