Prices for materials used in door and window manufacturing mostly increased from February 2022 to March 2022, while rising on a year-over-year basis, according to the latest Producer Price Index (PPI) from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS).

In March, the monthly PPI for flat glass in the commodity category was split, dropping 1.4% from the previous month but was up 9.5% compared to the previous year. According to BLS, the commodity classification “organizes products and services by similarity or material composition, regardless of the industry classification of the producing establishment.”

The index for flat glass manufacturing in the industry classification also went down 1.3% from February 2022, but was up 13.1% on a year-over-year basis. The industry classification measures “changes in prices received for the industry’s output sold outside the industry (that is, its net output).”

The PPI for metal windows increased both from February (2.5%) as well as 28.6% compared to the March 2021 report. Prices for metal doors and frames also increased overall, 2.1% over the previous month and 39.4% over the previous year. Prices for wood window units remained steady in March, but was up 8.4% on a year-over-year basis. Prices for wood doors for interior and exterior applications increased in March 2022, up 2.3% but saw an increase of 20.0% over March 2021 pricing.

The price for thermoplastic resins and plastic materials dropped by 1.0% over February 2022, but saw an increase of 7.2% compared to March 2021. Prices for fiberglass plastic products inched upward by 0.7% from the previous month, contributing to the 15.2% increase over last year.

The cost of builders’ hardware, which includes hardware used in doors and windows, also rose slightly 0.6% from February to March, but increased by 16.5% from March 2021.
