The latest Producer Price Index (PPI) from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) dropped this week and it shows prices for materials used in door and window manufacturing continued to increase across the board, not only from December 2021 to January 2022, but on a year-over-year basis as well.

In January, the monthly PPI for flat glass in the commodity category continued to climb, rising by 1.9% from the previous month and up 9.0% compared to the previous year. According to BLS, the commodity classification “organizes products and services by similarity or material composition, regardless of the industry classification of the producing establishment.”

The index for flat glass manufacturing in the industry classification continued the positive trend, up 1.4% from December 2022, and jumping 12.8% increase on a year-over-year basis. The industry classification measures “changes in prices received for the industry’s output sold outside the industry (that is, its net output).”

The PPI for metal windows but increased by 2.0% from December but jumped 28.6% over the January 2021 report. Prices for metal doors and frames also increased – from December to January, improving 1.3% and also improving 39.8% since last year. Prices for wood window units rose 2.7% from the previous month and was up 11% on a year-over-year basis. Prices for wood doors for interior and exterior applications also increased in January 2022, up 0.7% from December, but a full 16.7% over January 2021 pricing.

The price for thermoplastic resins and plastic materials had the only significant drop for this month, down 4.4% over December 2021, but remained positive with a jump of 27.9% over January of last year. Prices for all other fiberglass plastic products increased by 4.2% from the previous month and had an increase of 13.9% over the previous January.

The cost of builders’ hardware, which includes hardware used in doors and windows, rose 0.4% from December to January, but was 18.1% over January 2021.
