The latest Producer Price Index (PPI) from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) shows that prices for materials used in door and window manufacturing, by and large, continued to increase, not only from October to November 2021, but on a year-over-year basis as well.

In November, the monthly PPI for flat glass in the commodity category continued to climb, rising by .3% from the previous month and up 8.4% compared to the previous year. According to BLS, the commodity classification “organizes products and services by similarity or material composition, regardless of the industry classification of the producing establishment.”

The index for flat glass manufacturing in the industry classification continued the positive trend with a .8% increase from October 2021, and an 11.6% jump on a year-over-year basis. The industry classification measures “changes in prices received for the industry’s output sold outside the industry (that is, its net output).”

The PPI for metal windows but increased by 9.3% from October and clocks in at 26.2% over the November 2020 report. Prices for metal doors and frames also increased from October to November, improving 10.6% and improving 37.6% since last year. Prices for wood window units flat-lined from the October to November 2021, but was up 8.8% on a year-over-year basis. Prices for wood doors for interior and exterior applications increased in November 2021, up 1.8% from October, and that carried over to an increase of 16.7% over November 2020 pricing.

The price for thermoplastic resins and plastic materials had the first dip, down 1.4% over October 2021, but still had quite a positive jump, coming in 47.7% over November of last year. Prices for fiberglass plastic products also registered no change from the previous month but had an increase of 10.1% over the previous November.

The cost of builders’ hardware, which includes hardware used in doors and windows, rose by 2.3% from October to November, and rose by 17.7% from November 2020.
