2021 WMA Annual Convention and Tradeshow

As COVID-19 hung over 2020, it shut the door on one of the industry’s top trade shows for millwork products. “It has been a year of considerable change,” said Rosalie Leone, president and CEO for World Millwork Alliance (WMA), after switching the event to a virtual format for seminars. A year later, it’s time to change things back—to the way they’re meant to be, officials declare.

Since 1964, WMA’s annual convention and trade show has drawn everyone from millwork distributors and manufacturers to sales representatives. Scheduled to take place October 4-7, at the Arthur R. Outlaw Mobile Convention Center, in Mobile, Ala., the show now aims to make a successful return to its in-person format, with more than 60 door- and window-related companies signed up as exhibitors. Organizers plan to mark the occasion by hosting a grand opening reception Tuesday (October 5) on the trade show floor.

“The WMA conference has always been a great venue for seeing friendly faces, reconnecting with our customers and partners, renewing long-term acquaintances in the association and learning about all the latest developments in the millwork industry,” says John Destefano, divisional manager for Ponderosa Software.

Meanwhile, as the current variant of COVID-19 keeps the world on edge, show officials say they’re working with host hotels (see sidebar) and the convention center to ensure “a safe and enjoyable attendee experience.”

Following is a look at what you can expect to find on the show floor.

Worldwide Door Components Inc. plans to feature its newly patented 4Ever Sill product. Officials say the high-impact, full-composite threshold is designed as “the next generation of door sills.” The product eliminates the “chatter” associated with aluminum decks, along with denting and rotting. The composite material features UV protection to withstand the intense heat of summer sun and is available in bronze and mill finishes, with or without a PVC cover.

FrontLine Bldg. Products Inc. will display its maintenance-free aluminum-clad door frames, sidelites, patio door frames, aluminum garage door frames, composite door frames, aluminum-clad transom windows, wood and aluminum grilles and oversized direct set windows. Officials say the company has manufactured architectural door and window products for more than four decades.

Frameport Doors will display its stile-and-rail doors, including panel, louver, French, shaker, bifold, barn and fi re-rated models. Hailing from Southern Brazil, the company’s doors are available in clear Pine, primed or pre-finished, are FSC certified and include a five-year warranty. The company’s primed flat panel door series includes five designs available with square, ovoloor deco style sticking. The primed raised-panel Toscana series features eight designs. Both are available as 20-minute-rated fi re doors certified by Intertek.

Distribution Management Systems Inc. (DMSi) will have its Agility ERP software on hand, which officials say will streamline business processes, reduce errors and grow profitability. Users can create accurate, non-stock items in minutes and automatically generate work orders.

According to company information, by interfacing with manufacturing and quoting systems, such as the application Millwork Development, users can cut order-entry time in half. Agility’s eCommerce platform includes a visual configurator so customers can create accurate orders for custom doors, all while viewing the results. Meanwhile, a Mobile Warehouse Tools app reduces production delays by allowing users to update work order statuses from the shop floor.

Advanced Screen Systems Inc. will exhibit two products at the show that officials say represent industry firsts: a pet-resistant screen door and sliding patio security screen door. The company says both allow manufacturers and door shops “to tap previously inaccessible, highly
profitable revenue streams.”

The pet-resistant screen door attaches quickly at door shops to create one pre-hung unit, while the sliding patio security screen door features a heavy-duty frame that rides in existing tracks, eliminating the need for rescreening. Both products allow door and window companies to offer upgrades that customers “could only have obtained in the aftermarket,” officials suggest.

Araupel plans to draw eyes to a new finish for its painted products, including a proprietary primer coat that achieves what officials say is the “smoothest surface available in the market.” The finish process is designed to guarantee uniform coverage and is final paint ready without any need for sanding. The company also plans to present its primed, flat jambs and S4S boards made in finger-jointed hardwood from plantation forests.

Royal Building Products will show its PVC trim and moulding products, which officials say can be used “to create statement-making homes.” Interior and exterior products are designed to be beautiful, durable and versatile. All of the company’s products are moisture-proof, termite-proof and guaranteed not to decay or rot.

Simpson Door Company looks to show off two of its newest products: Redi-Prime raised panel interior doors and Dutch doors.

A new raised-panel style combines the Simpson wood door method of construction with medium-density fiberboard (MDF) veneers on classic stile and rail surfaces, solid MDF panels and a priming process to provide an effective noise barrier. The product is designed to provide long-lasting architectural beauty and is a proven value when compared to molded skin interior doors, officials say. The product is factory double-primed, sanded for easy painting and backed by a 10-year warranty.

The company’s new Dutch doors provide a balance of privacy and connectivity, for more flexible, customized living spaces. The bottom half can be closed to keep pets and kiddos from getting into trouble, while the top half stays open to ensure adults can be aware of what’s happening in the next room.


RSL plans to showcase an array of products in its booth, including the clean and contemporary Vogue and Victoria door designs. Both products will be paired with privacy glass that officials are betting will be “sure to catch the eye.”

Also on display will be the company’s Orleans door, with a prefinished black exterior and white interior, paired with black Glide internal blinds in a black exterior and white interior frame to match. Additionally, RSL will offer a sneak peek of two new doorglass designs, Summit and Avenue, which will be available in 2022.

Masisa aims to show how the company works “every day to transform spaces and inspire the lives of our customers … with design, quality and sustainability.” The company will display its products made of MDF light, melamine, and other value-added boards.

It supplies to 30 markets within Latin America, North America, the Caribbean, Central America and Asia, providing products developed under a responsible production process, complying with TSCA title VI, CARB 2, FSC and EPA certifications.
