Anthony Innovations is celebrating its 70th anniversary this year. In a decades-long process that spans three generations, the company found its way from producing industrial bearings out of a corrugated iron shed, to a multinational-company offering door and window rollers across Australia, North America and Asia.

Started in 1951 by Sil Anthony, officials say the company “started in the boom years of the 50s and 60s powered by the skills and talents of European post-war migration.” Originally known as Anthony Bearings, it produced custom, short run bearings suited for use in industrial conveyor rollers. In the 1970s and 80s, the company “prospered,” they say, as demand grew amid a strong Australian economy. By the 1990s, however, a recession, deregulation and globalization began to make their marks on demand. As a result, the business was “faced with the challenge many Australian manufacturers struggled with at the time: evolve or die,” officials say. In the end, it was second-generation leader Phil Anthony who decided to pivot to fenestration, focusing on rollers for sliding doors and windows.

“This evolution saw the company broadening its knowledge base, investing more into local Australian engineering and design skills to develop more advanced products and innovative materials, while establishing relationships with overseas manufacturing to develop a more competitive supply chain,” a company announcement says. The company also expanded to North America and Europe. By 2009, those decisions proved successful, leading to Anthony Innovations Changzhou, an Australian-based business that’s located in China. By operating “a highly-mechanized factory” in Asia, officials say the provider can have more influence over such things as quality control, while protecting intellectual properties.

Now, “With the leadership mantle being passed down on to the third generation of Anthony’s in Ben and his brother Drew, this Australian success story is ready to face the future and continue to innovate for years to come,” officials declare.
