Prices for materials used in door and window manufacturing mostly increased from July 2020 to August 2020, while rising on a year-over-year basis, according to the latest Producer Price Index (PPI) from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS).

In August, the monthly PPI for flat glass in the commodity category continued to slide, dropping by .1% from the previous month but was up 1% compared to the previous year. According to BLS, the commodity classification “organizes products and services by similarity or material composition, regardless of the industry classification of the producing establishment.”

The index for flat glass manufacturing in the industry classification went down another 0.4% from July 2020, but was up 0.1% on a year-over-year basis. The industry classification measures “changes in prices received for the industry’s output sold outside the industry (that is, its net output).”

The PPI for metal windows has remained the same for three straight months, but increased 2.9% compared to the August 2019 report. Prices for metal doors and frames also stayed the same from July to August, improving 1.5% since last year. Prices for wood window units remained the same in August—the fourth month without significant change—but was up 3.2% on a year-over-year basis. Prices for wood doors for interior and exterior applications increased slightly in August 2020, up .1% and carried that over to an increase of 5.4% over August 2019 pricing.

The price for thermoplastic resins and plastic materials rose by 4.4% over July 2020, but saw an overall drop of 3.9% compared to August 2019. Prices for fiberglass plastic products have remained the same since June and are still down by 0.3% over last year.

The cost of builders’ hardware, which includes hardware used in doors and windows, rose 0.1% from July to August, and clocked a 2.8% increase from August 2019.
