Prices for materials used in door and window manufacturing continue the trend of minimal change in August 2019, and continue to increase on a year-over-year basis according to the latest Producer Price Index (PPI) from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS).

 

In July, the monthly PPI for flat glass in the commodity category rose by 0.7% from the previous month, and 1.5% from August 2018. According to the BLS, the commodity classification “organizes products and services by similarity or material composition, regardless of the industry classification of the producing establishment.”

The index for flat glass manufacturing in the industry classification also rose 2% from July 2019, and is up 3.1% on a year-over-year basis. The industry classification measures “changes in prices received for the industry’s output sold outside the industry (that is, its net output).”

The PPI for metal windows inched higher to 0.5% from the July 2019 level and grew 4.1% from the August 2018 report a year ago. Metal doors and frames held steady from July and rose 2.7% for the year. Prices for wood window units remained the same from July to August 2019 but are up 6% year-over-year. Prices for wood doors for interior and exterior applications were unchanged from July 2019 but went up 0.5% since August 2018.

The price of thermoplastic resins and plastic materials continues to drop, with this month decreasing by 1.4% from July and 13% from August 2018. Fiberglass plastic product prices went down slightly by 0.1% since July and but rose 0.9% for the year.

The cost of builders’ hardware, which includes hardware used in doors and windows, stayed the same from July to August and that price is 3.1% higher than in August 2018.
