Prices for materials used in door and window manufacturing saw another month with minimal change in July 2019, and continue to increase on a year-over-year basis according to the latest Producer Price Index (PPI) from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS).

In July, the monthly PPI for flat glass in the commodity category rose by 0.4% from the previous month, and 0.7% from July 2018. According to the BLS, the commodity classification “organizes products and services by similarity or material composition, regardless of the industry classification of the producing establishment.”

The index for flat glass manufacturing in the industry classification also rose 0.7% from June 2019 and is up 1.3% on a year-over-year basis. The industry classification measures “changes in prices received for the industry’s output sold outside the industry (that is, its net output).”

The PPI for metal windows stayed the same as its June 2019 level. It’s up 8.3% from the July 2018 report a year ago. Metal doors and frames also held steady from June and are up 3.4% for the year. Prices for wood window units remained the same from June to July 2019 but are up 6% year-over-year. Prices for wood doors for interior and exterior applications were unchanged from June 2019 but are up 0.5% since July 2018.

The price of thermoplastic resins and plastic materials dropped 0.6% from last month and 10% from July 2018. Fiberglass plastic product prices rose 0.3% since June and 1.9% for the year.

The cost of builders’ hardware, which includes hardware used on doors and windows, rose 0.1% from June to July and that price is 3% higher than in June 2018.
