Spring is only days away. So, the door and window industries will soon be taking off again. However, many of my customers report that they never really experienced a winter slowdown. Indeed, some were way busier than they expected to be for all of January and most of February, and never really did get a chance to catch their breath as they would normally do this time of year.

But, with spring coming so soon, and spring breaks being planned at most schools across the nation, it is particularly important to take some time off and spend time with the family before things start getting crazy!

I say this, because most of the people in the door and window industries are among the hardest working people I know. There is something about his industry that stirs passion among us and causes us to work long hours in the window factory getting orders out on time, or to spend numerous days on the road visiting customers and closing new business. In a nutshell: This industry can be addictive!

So why do we do it? We do it because this is a very exciting industry to work in, which gets us fired up. But it is also important to have as much passion—or even more—toward our family. Providing monetary support for our loved ones at home is important, indeed, but the greatest gift we can give to our loved ones is our time. So, taking time out from our busy schedules and spending a week with the people we love is a great way to show them how truly important they are to us. It is also a fantastic way to recharge our own “batteries.”

One might argue that this is unnecessary, given the fact that we just had a break at Christmas, not so long ago. Well, did you ever notice that the Christmas season isn’t necessarily all that relaxing? With all the running around, shopping, decorating and visiting relatives, many people find it to be one of the most exhausting times of the year. Then, before you know it—we are back to work.

Now, with the selling season about to kick into high gear, there is a certain amount of pressure that goes with ensuring that the company has another year of growth. So, can one really afford to take time away now? Maybe we should wait until another successful year is under our belt and then take some time off?

Well, experts would call that a mistake. It is very important to take time away now to refresh yourself and to make sure you stay connected to family. It doesn’t have to be a fancy vacation in an exotic resort. For some, refreshment is simply staying home and doing things around the house, coupled with a long weekend at a local spot. It is simply about putting a halt to the work routine and doing a few things that are the most enjoyable, with the people in your life that matter most.

There will still be plenty of doors and windows to make and sell when you get back, but there is no guarantee that the special people in your life will still be around next year.

We have all heard the old adage about taking time to smell the roses. Well, this author says, “Take time to open your windows and take in a healthy breath of fresh spring air!”
