More than three quarters of home professionals regularly receive requests for smart home installations or service, and they expect demand to increase over the next 12 months, according to a new survey from HomeAdvisor and CEDIA. The report says door and window installers are starting to specialize in this field.

“This report shows that when it comes to smart home technologies, homeowners are migrating away from DIY to more of a ‘do-it-for-me’ mind-set,” said HomeAdvisor smart home strategist Dan DiClerico. “The findings present a blueprint that will help professionals succeed in the ever-evolving smart home field.”

The report is based on an online survey conducted by HomeAdvisor and CEDIA. The survey was conducted nationwide from June 6- July 1 among 1,450 respondents. Each respondent said the majority of their work is on residential projects.

About 83 percent of home professionals say they get requests for smart-home installations and services at least once a month. About 17 percent receive requests daily, and roughly 30 percent are asked a few times a week.

According to research from McKinsey & Company, smart home hardware, including door and window locks, is helping fuel the growth in home automation. It’s on track to generate $9 billion in sales in 2017. The survey finds that the most popular reasons for installing smart home devices are to improve safety (69 percent), improve accessibility (61 percent) improve comfort and relaxation (59 percent) and increase home efficiency (54 percent). Fenestration professionals specialize in products that serve all those needs.

CEDIA forecasts that the market for smart home installers, which hit about$20 billion in 2016, could triple in the next 10 years. Millennials will be the driving force behind that growth, the report finds. According to Harvard’s Joint Center for Housing Studies, that generation will represent about 50 million households by the year 2035.

The results are pretty clear: There is tremendous growth opportunity in our market, and CEDIA will be there to offer the necessary skills and training for those home professionals who need to get up to speed.”

HomeAdvisor runs one of the world’s largest home-services marketplaces. CEDEA is a trade association for companies that design, manufacture and install technology for the home.
