Think about it for a second. Would you, sitting on one side of the desk, want to hire you, sitting on the other side of the desk during an interview? As this economy continues to grow, we will be seeing more and more people looking to better themselves, their finances and the company they work for. But will they succeed? Sure, they might be able to find a new job that pays more, and they may even find a way to better themselves, but a rock-star employee will find ways to improve the company that they work for.

If this is your attitude as you go about your daily tasks, you are definitely in the minority. You might be asking yourself, “What does a true rock star look like in today’s corporate world?” What a great question. Listed below are some helpful concepts that will propel you into rock-star status with your company. If you engage in these as a fellow team member, it won’t be long until you are an employee with your own parking space.

  1. Think outside your department. Ever hear someone say, “That’s not my job”? I cringe when I hear this. The rock star will learn and understand other areas of the business. It will help them do their job better, and it will show that you really care.
  2. Treat it as if it were your own. I always appreciated people who treated my company as if it was theirs. This is a great trait, especially if you have direct contact with clients. Imagine your clients having someone not in their business treating it as if it was theirs. How awesome would that be to have someone looking out for your best interest, not just theirs?
  3. Always be on the lookout. Many times, opportunities don’t just arise from 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. If you truly want to be a rock star, then be on the lookout for growth opportunities 24/7. Coming in to work with an opportunity that you saw over the weekend will show others your commitment to the team.
  4. Continuous improvement doesn’t scare you. Does a rock star ever say, “Well, that’s just the way we have always done things around here”? If you truly want to succeed, you must be open to change and continuous improvement. Don’t just be open to it, embrace it … look at it as a great opportunity to learn and advance yourself and your company.
  5. Be transparent. Do you know anyone in business who avoids the tough conversations? Don’t be that way. If you see something that needs to be addressed, be the one to address it positively and with professionalism.
  6. Eliminate drama. The workplace is not a soap opera. Rock-star employees are on the high-standards and low-maintenance list. Do your best to leave your home life in the car and come in with a fresh attitude on life. Others will appreciate it more than you know.
  7. Inspire others to grow. Positivity breeds positivity. I found it is really hard for people to be negative when you are being positive. Rock stars are iconic in nature. There is nothing wrong with being the company poster child for growth. Do you know anyone who you just want to be around since they inspire you? I do, and every chance I get, I meet with them to learn from them.
  8. Be teachable. It’s safe to say that with today’s technology advancements, knowledge is a moving target. Be open to learn, explore and expand. The true ability to learn is a rare gift. The “know it alls” are going to suffer as there is no way you can know it all. I have met people who say “yes” to everything I ask them. But yet, they asked me to help them with growing their business, yet they know everything I have shared with them already. “Seek first to understand, then be understood.”
  9. Be positive. Here is a great one. Did you know that professional athletes who practice positive thoughts and appreciate others perform at a higher level? ( Do your best daily to be positive. You will not regret it. If you don’t remember any of the others, remember this one.
  10. Challenge authority. This is controversial, but if you challenge those in authority in a positive and professional manner, you can help them grow as well. “Iron sharpens iron,” Proverbs 27:17. As a leader, I always value those who challenge both my thoughts and me. Quite frankly, I am not always right, and I need someone to help with along the way with this.
