After being family owned for almost 30 years, Grabill Windows and Doors now has a new owner.

Pella Corp., a major manufacturer of doors and windows, has announced its plan to acquire the Almont, Mich.-based company, which manufactures designer and custom luxury fenestration.

Formerly known as Grabill Inc., the company will now be known as Grabill Windows and Doors Inc.

Grabill's doors and windows are on the high-end side, a market sector Pella wants to penetrate more.

Teresa Grabill, chief financial officer, says the move was made in order to better serve their customers.

“We have been in the high-end window and door market for quite some time. Our business has been growing so rapidly, and Pella can help us with that growth so we can meet the needs of [our customers],” she says. With Pella on its side, the company will now have its products NFRC tested in-house, shortened lead times and expanded buying power for the glass, metal and lumber the company uses in its products.

According to Grabill, except for enhanced efficiency, nothing has changed internally.

“My husband and I are still here running the business,” she says. “This is a transition. We want to make sure it’s a good transition,” which means running things the way the company has been. “The thing about Pella is they don’t want to come in and change us. It’s not like we’re a broken company that we need fixed. They’re perfectly happy with the way we’re doing things. And it’s part of the market that they want to transition on.”

She also offered high praise for Pella CEO Pat Meyer, who says, “Grabill and Pella have so many values in common, including product innovation, quality and culture, it just makes sense for Grabill to join the Pella Corp. family.”

The ownership will officially switch hands on May 1. It will maintain its brand and continue to focus on the luxury marketplace.

The 40 employees at the manufacturing facility will join the Pella team, the company said in a statement.

The terms of the sale won’t be disclosed, as they are both privately owned.
