During a cold January in 2002, I discovered how the Internet could be used to brand, market, generate leads and convert sales for my family’s remodeling business. The “World Wide Web” was only 10 years old, our website was newly born and I just recently started sending and receiving email for business.

I was sitting at the kitchen table of an elderly man who was telling me things about windows and siding he couldn’t possibly know unless he’d visited my new website. I suddenly realized I was face-to-face with a web surfer – the rare breed of potential customer I had built a website to capture.

His project was large and intricate—too elaborate to be a first call close for me. My normal procedure would have been to schedule a follow-up meeting. This time, since this homeowner was Internet-savvy, I told him I could email my proposal, and he gave me his AOL address.

When I got back to my office, I prepared my first contract meant for email, wrote a personal note to my client, attached the contract and pushed the send button.

The next morning, I opened my inbox and—guess what? I had a reply!

I opened my client’s mail with all the anticipation of a kid on Christmas morning. He told me he’d reviewed my contract, printed it, signed it and mailed it to me along with his deposit—just as instructed! He emailed me this good news at 11:47 p.m. the night before. I had gotten the go-ahead for my biggest sale of the month while I was sleeping!

It was an epiphany for me and I thought, “This is how the Internet works!”

I wondered what I had done right. More importantly, I wondered how I could consistently repeat the Internet sales process in the future.

My analysis revealed a lot about how to market successfully to potential customers on the Internet, generate leads and convert leads into sales in this new virtual world.

I also realized I had uncovered a speck of gold in a bottomless mine.

Naturally, I got out my shovel and started digging for more. While excavating, I found tools to dig deeper for leads, more ways to expose my brand and techniques to unearth profitable sales nuggets. I made the Internet my own virtual gold mine where I continually go panning for potential customers. Simply put, the Internet adds a virtual dimension to our business that produces very real leads, sales and profits.

And THAT is how the internet works for my business. Even while I’m sleeping …
