This may sound odd to many of you but I have basically stopped watching the news. A friend of mine, Jeffrey Gitomer, told me if you want to stay positive, “Don’t watch the news.” In the age of the Internet and the 24 hour news cycle, it’s not easy to avoid the news – but it’s not impossible either.

I have to tell you when you tune into the news, you really do not see anything positive. Unfortunately, bad news sells and gets the ratings. The newscaster almost seems to want to say, “This is the worst ever …” fill in the blanks. At the end of day, bad news might sell newspapers and bring in the ratings, but it does not help us stay focused on having a positive attitude, building our businesses and selling.

A couple of years ago, I was the person watching the national news while I got ready for work. And it doesn’t matter whether you are a FOX News junkie, CNN, MSNBC – they all have their slanted view of the world. But it does nothing to help you get ready to ‘take on the world.’ In fact, it hurts your attitude and focus.

“But Ty, I need to know what the weather is going to be that day?” I understand but take a look at that weather app on your smart phone. I also understand that knowing the news cycle can help with small talk and building rapport with a customer or prospect. But do you really want the customer or prospect to associate you with ‘bad news?’

In the car, if you have XM Radio, there is plenty to listen to including a great new business channel. In addition, there are also tons of podcasts you can subscribe to on your phone and either link the audio to your car radio or listen on your speaker phone. You can be building a better you while traveling in the car.

My point is simple. There is always going to be bad news out there to distract you from doing your best. And similar to sports, there is a fine line between being great and mediocre. If you want to be great, I suggest being different instead of doing the same thing everyone else is doing. Set yourself apart – get away from the news and talk radio. Focus on becoming a better you and great things will happen!

Great Selling!

Tyson's Take

  1. Tyson, you know and I know what you are writing is absurd. Existence exists whether you want it to or not. You are suggesting allowing your emotions to be your cognition. Think this through Tyson!

  2. I understood that your blog focused on the negative sensationalism of television news, a better alternative would be printed newspapers – a dying medium.

    Thanks for your “take” Ty!

  3. I couldn’t agree more, Tyson. CNN and the major network news broadcasts have degenerated into a “how can we scare them today” format. I switched to ESPN years ago.

  4. Great Stuff Tyson! Research reveals that if you have 3 positive experiences to every 1 negative, your life will change for the good. So eliminating some of the negative is helpful in this quest! Keep up the great work…

  5. Tyson, you are totally correct. The news isn’t what it is supposed to be – News. Its hype and ratings and slanted info pumped up and rerun to death to fill the overabundance of time they try to fill.
Those channels are not where I keep up with the world.
You can still stay informed. Find a decent news website and check the events and read only what is really important.
Want to try something interesting. Go on line and look at a global news source from outside the states. I’m sure some lean a bit right or left, but its interesting how they often portray just the facts. Huh. What a concept.
