On March 19, the employees of MI Windows and Doors (MIWD) in Gratz, Pa., were awarded the Pennsylvania Governor’s Award for Safety Excellence (GASE). The Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry presented the award to the team lead by Chris Koperna, Safety Coordinator, and Mike Troutman, Corporate Safety and Environmental Manager.

gI_138966_GaseAward“It’s a great honor for the team to achieve this award for their hard work that they do as we continually build on our safety culture,” says Chris Koperna.

Mike Troutman adds, “This clearly shows the dedication to safety of all team members at MIWD Gratz. Our team members are our most valued resource; they produce a quality product and we want every one of them to be injury free.”

The GASE is a highly competitive award and the information gained from the companies who receive it provides valuable best practices that are shared across the state. In 2013, only 10 Pennsylvania companies were selected to receive the honor. MIWD was recognized due to their constant commitment to safety through programs including their “Lock-Out, Tag-Out” process, the effort to modify machinery and equipment to prevent injury, and a mandatory stretching program for all team members.

“Companies who receive this award have implemented safety processes that generate tangible safety improvements,” states Eugene C. Connell, deputy secretary of the department. “Your commitment to safety serves as an example to all of Pennsylvania’s employers. Maintaining a safe workplace is essential to ensuring a productive workplace. MI Windows and Doors exemplifies success in achieving both of these goals.”
