Milgard recently was recognized as a contributing partner of New Town Homes, a Grand Winner at the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Challenge Home awards. New Town Builders installed Style Line™ Series in the zero energy-ready home.

Going above and beyond Energy Star® requirements, New Town Builders announced in 2012 that every home it builds at Stapleton, a 7.5-square-mile planned community, will earn a Challenge Home certification from the DOE. Challenge Home builders are in the top 1 percent of builders in the country that meet DOE-specified requirements for excellence and quality. Homes meeting DOE’s Challenge Home criteria must include high insulation levels and air tightness, features that improve indoor air quality and water conservation, as well as durable and safe construction to protect against natural disasters. Each home is equipped with technologies that exceed current code requirements to provide quality appliances, HVAC, comfort and solar-ready components that result in ultra-low or no utility bills.

Thirty-four Milgard Style Line Series windows and one sliding glass door were installed to help reach the performance levels achieved by New Town Homes. The builder used a reduced framing technique at the windows to reduce lumber costs while allowing more space for insulation. The windows were argon-filled and included SunCoatMAX® Low-E3 glass that helps reduce winter heat loss while controlling summer heat gain.

An independent verifier tests and inspects every home’s performance to calculate a Home Energy Rating System (HERS) score, the nationally recognized scoring system for measuring a home’s energy performance; the lower the number, the more energy-efficient the home.

Milgard is one of many participants for the home including its affiliate, Allied Insulation, a MASCO Contractor Services company.
