There was a great deal of door and window news in 2013, but what were the most clicked on stories on throughout the year? Was it Andersen’s purchase of Weiland? The fact that former Republic CEO Richard Gillman pled guilty? Those were in the top 50 but not the top five.

Lawsuits always gain a lot of attention and this year was no different. The number one most read story was the fact that seven major window manufacturers and two distributors had patent infringement lawsuits filed against them by J-Channel Industries.

Number two may be a slight surprise as it’s not an acquisition that gained attention, but it proves that readers like lists—and they like to see who made it to the top. DWM’s September 6 story stating the five window companies named to Consumers Digest “Best Buy” list for replacement windows was a must read.

But readers still like those news of acquisitions and the number three top story was a buy back that many were thrilled to see. On July 2 DWM reported that Loewen, of Steinbach, Manitoba, Canada, had been acquired by a group of investors including original shareholders Charles Loewen and Clyde Loewen, along with new investors Al Babiuk, president and CEO, members of management and other private investors.

The number four spot was claimed way back on January 14 when we announced that Thermal Industries was participating in a pilot program to sell its windows in Walmart.

At number five was the news on January 17 that Great Day Improvements acquired the assets of Stanek Vinyl Window Company’s operating assets for an undisclosed price.

DWM also brings news to its readers through its on-site show coverage and our video highlights of the recent Win-door show in November claimed the top video spots, followed by our coverage of the International Builder’ Show. Look for our editors to be on site once again in Las Vegas for IBS February 4-6. Also claiming a top video spot was DWM’s trip to the University of Florida to learn of groundbreaking research being performed by Dr. Forest Masters.

Visitors to the DWM site also look to its bloggers for various takes on the industry and the most read blog was written by Jim Plavecsky, “Energy Star 6.0 What’s all the Controversy?”

“Somewhere along the road, the concept has changed to that of a program in which all window manufacturers are expected to be in compliance. Now, call me crazy, but what value does this have to a consumer? asked Plavecsky.

Energy Star is a topic the entire industry is interested in and Tyson Schwartz’s blog on Energy Star claimed the next top spot by a blogger. Schwartz reminded companies that it’s about the numbers but it’s also about the marketing. “For window manufacturers to be successful in 2013 and 2014, sales and marketing will have to work closer than ever with production and engineering to come up with the most innovative ways to drive to the 2014 Energy Star requirements.”
