Northeast Building Products (NBP) in Philadelphia, Pa., is set to begin production of a new window line at the beginning of March. That new line will come to fruition with a little help from a former competitor.

When Dove Windows, with plants in Wilkes-Barre, Pa., and a brand new location in Dublin, Va., announced it would close last year, Alan Levin, president of NBP called Bruce Dove, general manager, the next day. The company ended up buying the equipment from the eight-month-old Virginia plant and “the Sturtz equipment was automated and state of the art,” says Levin.

That purchase was made at auction in November and Dove started with NEBP as business development manager the next day. The company will produce the former 2800 window from Dove and sell it under NBP’s Camelot Pro Series. NBP also purchased equipment for its Sashlite production line to support the growth of its largest dealer Power Home Remodeling.

“We liked the aesthetics and performance of the 2800 window,” says Levin. “We will take this window to the distribution market. We will be able to be more competitive as the new equipment will allow us to mass produce it.”

Dove says he is happy in his new role.

“I didn’t have to come in and do everything and be everything,” says Dove. “They have IT support and accomplished managers and engineers. Their infrastructure is very solid and I get to do the things I do well.”

“Even though we were competitors we always got along and had a mutual respect for one another,” adds Levin. “The minute we heard [they were closing] we started talking.”

Dove isn’t the only employee who is fairly new at Northeast. A few weeks before bringing on Dove, NBP hired Brian Samuels, formerly with Silverline, in the newly created position of national sales manager.
