ProVia, based in Sugarcreek, Ohio, is taking Energy Star education to elementary students through a program developed by its marketing team.

The idea started as a way to enhance ProVia’s long-standing relationship with the Energy Star program, in which it has participated with its energy-efficient doors and windows since 2002. One thing the U.S. Department of Energy looks for from their manufacturing partners is an emphasis on education. So ProVia says it “set out to find ways to enlighten and inform.”

“Sammy the Star” was born, and a coloring book about him was written and illustrated by one of ProVia’s graphic designers, Chris Woytko. ProVia makes these coloring books, along with packs of ProVia-branded crayons, available to its dealers.

The next step in the plan takes ProVia’s Energy Star education program into elementary schools in the communities surrounding its corporate headquarters. “Children growing up today face many choices about environmental responsibility, and most are not aware of the consequences of their decisions,” says Cindy Miller, corporate director of marketing.

At Miller Avenue School in Sugarcreek, Ohio, students were eager to answer questions and identify sources of renewable and non-renewable energy, and were able to use solar meters to measure variances in heat-gain through single-, double- and triple-paned glass.
