Dereck Craig McAvoy, 58, died June, 30 at his home in Reston, Va. Known to many in the industry as “Bub,” McAvoy worked for Mid South Building Supply for 34 years. As vice president of sales and director of architectural specifications, he also helped establish and expand the company.

While successful in his work endeavors, those who knew him best say he will be most remembered for his unbridled gregariousness and the magnanimity he showed his friends. According to Tyson Schwartz, vice president of sales and marketing for Thermal Industries, McAvoy was an important part of the industry. “Dereck was well respected in the industry, especially the Virginia/Maryland marketplace. He was affectionately referred to and will be remembered as Bub.”

A devoted father to both his son, Kyle, and late daughter Erin Kathleen, McAvoy is survived by his wife, son, brother and sister.

A viewing will be held from 6-8 p.m. on July 8 at Adams-Green Funeral Home located at 721 Elden St., Herndon, Va., where a funeral service will take place at 10 a.m. Monday, July 9. Interment will follow at Chestnut Grove Cemetery in Herndon.

In lieu of flowers the family has requested that any contributions be made to the Erin McAvoy Scholarship fund at Davis and Elkins College through the Office of College Advancement 100 Campus Drive Elkins, WV 26241. Phone number: 304/637-1240.
