The Builders Hardware Manufacturers Association (BHMA) has published ANSI/BHMA A156.21-2009 for Thresholds. This standard is a revision of A156.21-2006 which establishes requirements for thresholds. Types are described with identifying numbers. Strength tests, fastening systems and gasketing tests are included.

The new edition includes provisions for additional material types per the table below:
1 – Architectural Extruded Brass or Bronze
3 – Aluminum
5 – Stainless Steel
7 – Rubber and Similar Non-metallics
0 – Other [i.e. cast iron, safety abrasive, etc.]

There are requirements for thresholds used in fire door assemblies and openings, as well as the test requirements and procedures in the standard.
