WDMA Architectural Wood Door Standards Approved as American National Standards

November 4th, 2013 by DWM Magazine

Two of the Window and Door Manufacturers Association (WDMA) Total Product Performance™ standards for interior architectural wood doors have been approved as American National Standards. ANSI/WDMA I.S.1A-13, Industry Standard for Interior Architectural Wood Flush Doors, and ANSI/WDMA I.S.6A-13, Industry Standard for Interior Architectural Wood Stile and Rail Doors have received their recognition from the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) Board of Standards Review.

“These standards are the result of several years of work by the National Architectural Door Council membership, and are a significant step toward recognizing the innovations that have occurred within the wood door industry over the past decade,” said Steve Sisson, president of Karona, Inc. and Chair of the NADC. “Having them also recognized as American National Standards further attests to the significance of door performance duty level testing to commercial and architectural project specifiers.”

ANSI/WDMA I.S.1A-13 defines the aesthetic grades and performance duty levels for interior architectural wood flush doors. Similarly, ANSI/WDMA I.S.6A-13 defines the aesthetic grades and performance duty levels for interior architectural wood stile and rail doors. The new ANSI standards provide uniform aesthetic criteria, performance evaluation, construction and factory finishing requirements, and tests to ensure all products complying with the standard are evaluated on an equal basis. The ANSI standards also provide a logical system of references, keyed to a guide specification, to facilitate thorough, precise, and accurate architectural specifications.

ANSI/WDMA I.S.1A-13 and ANSI/WDMA I.S.6A-13 were developed by the members of the WDMA National Architectural Door Council (NADC), and a canvass list of organizations and experts knowledgeable in architectural door construction, use, and specification. The 2013 ANSI standards update and replace the former standards, WDMA I.S.1A-11 and WDMA I.S.6A-11.

These two new ANSI standards also coordinate their content with each other and with the 2009 Architectural Woodwork Standards (AWS), resulting in more consistent and comparable product requirements amongst these three documents.

Copies of ANSI/WDMA I.S.1A-13, Industry Standard for Interior Architectural Wood Flush Doors, and ANSI/WDMA I.S.6A-13, Industry Standard for Interior Architectural Wood Stile and Rail Doors are available for purchase from the WDMA Online Bookstore.
