Republic Update: Workers Refuse to Leave; Owner Reportedly Has Started New Company

December 7th, 2008 | Category: Industry News

When reports surfaced last week that Chicago’s Republic Windows and Doors would close on Friday December 5, due to the fact that Bank of America canceled its line of credit, many in the industry were shocked. Then came the news on Friday that workers staged a sit in demanding their severance and vacation pay. The story took another unusual turn when, according to an article on ChicagoBreaking News.com, (click here for that article)”people who apparently have ties to the financially strapped Republic Windows formed a limited liability corporation in Illinois last month, Echo Windows & Doors, that has bought a similar plant in western Iowa.”

The article went on, “Sharon Gillman, who shares an address with Republic President and CEO Rich Gillman, is listed as an officer of Echo Windows & Doors LLC.”

According to state records, the company was incorporated in Illinois on November 18.

Amy Zimmerman, who served as vice president of sales and marketing for Republic, also is listed as the registered contact for a website, www.echowindows.com, according to www.networksolutions.com.

DWM’s calls to Zimmerman last Thursday morning went unanswered.

In another interesting twist, DWM magazine reported on Thursday, December 4 that TRACO announced the sale of its residential vinyl replacement division to Echo Windows LLC. Click here for that article. Officials from TRACO have not responded to requests for more information on Echo.

This story, which has received national attention, including that of President Elect Barack Obama and Jesse Jackson, will unfold further on Monday, December 8, when a meeting is scheduled to take place among Republic and union personnel, according to reports.
