Minnesota Senate Bill Could Amend State’s Law Relating to Window Fall Prevention Devices
Mar 9th, 2010 | By DWM Mag | Category: Industry NewsA Minnesota senator has introduced legislation that would exempt windows with a sill bottom of more than 22 inches above the finished floor from the state’s law regarding window fall prevention devices. The bill, introduced by Sen. Linda Berglin (D), would add the following language to the law:
The rules shall not apply to windows with a sill bottom of more than 22 inches above the finished floor.
If passed in its current form, the bill also would require the state’s commissioner of labor and industry to amend the state’s building code to comply with the law.
The law, passed in 2008, addresses window fall prevent devices, including safety screens, hardware, guards and “other devices that comply with the standards established by the commissioner of labor and industry.”
Some industry trade organizations, such as the American Architectural Manufacturers Association (AAMA) have been actively involved in working to help prevent falls from windows.
“AAMA is part of the Window Safety Task Force, whose efforts focus on the balance between fall prevention and emergency egress. It’s important to teach children not to play near open windows, but also how to utilize windows for escape in case of fire,” says Rich Walker, AAMA president and chief executive officer. “Minnesota has taken this a step further by requiring window opening limiting devices and a minimum sill height. Regardless of guards, railings and other devices, proper supervision by an adult is essential to window safety.”
Berglin introduced the bill on March 1 and it has been read once, and referred to the Senate’s business, industry and jobs committee.

WHERE DOES IT END? “…Regardless of guards, railings and other devices, proper supervision by an adult is essential to window safety.” As a mother myself, I could write for pages all the dangers to children in a household for which we could PASS BILLS AND LAWS for prevention. Why don’t we just pass a law that our children must be encased in a suit of armor until the age of 18 for protection?
But you know what it all boils down to, and ALWAYS WILL? PROPER PARENTAL SUPERVISION. THERE IS NOT A SINGLE LAW that can enforce this! But all you do gooders keep spinning your wheels. Maybe you should concoct a law that requires people to take a course and get a license to have a child? There you go…a little more tax revenue coming in, some more of our rights taken away…heck, maybe the government should just step in and raise our children for us. NOW THERE IS A TRUE ABOMINATION!
