IBHS Helps Build Stronger, Safer St. Jude Dream Home

January 27th, 2012 by DWM Magazine

The Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety (IBHS) announced that the standards of its FORTIFIED for Safer Living®, a construction program for new homes that provides specific standards and guidelines to build strong, safe new homes, will be used in the construction of the home in the St. Jude Dream Home Giveaway in Eads, Tenn. The home features PlyGem MW 200 double hung windows with tempered glass.

“IBHS commends St. Jude for its commitment to building its Dream Home to be as resistant as possible to the natural catastrophes and severe weather that can occur in Tennessee,” said Fred Malik, IBHS FORTIFIED program manager. “By incorporating the IBHS FORTIFIED criteria, this home will be stronger, safer and more resilient than a traditional, code-compliant structure in the face of natural disasters like earthquakes, and severe weather events such as thunderstorms with high winds and hail.”

According to the announcement, Tennessee is one of eight states located in the New Madrid Seismic Zone, which experienced some of the worst earthquakes in U.S. history. During 1811-12, the central Mississippi valley was violently shaken by a series of three earthquakes above a magnitude 7, and up to 200 substantial aftershocks. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, a similar risk exists today, the announcement notes.

The St. Jude Dream Home will be constructed with more than a dozen IBHS FORTIFIED features designed to provide proactive, cost-effective protection against earthquakes, high winds and hail. The program is a cooperative effort of IBHS, Southern Serenity Homes, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and the Central U.S. Earthquake Consortium.

  1. I am the the owner of jamsill incorporated and grandfather of Peter Martin a St. Jude miracle. Pete’s brain tumor was eradicated six years ago and continues be doing so well at the age of eight.

We manufacture sill pans for exterior doors and windows for the past 29 years. I feel the need to supply sill pans for this project. I hope someone will contact us (we will attempt to contact someone) to make this possible. Our toll free number is 800-526-7455 and ask for Jeff Martin (Pete’s dad). Hoping this message gets to the right person. A very thankful grandpa.

  2. I have passed your message to IBHS. Thanks so much for your generosity and keep us posted.
